Yeah, that means I'm excited about something. Czech this out:

I've known for a while now that these guys selected "Tattooed People" for inclusion in this new "Best of" anthology that's just this year rolling out. And now, finally, I've come to find that the book should be hitting stores right around the corner and is already up at Amazon here for the low low price of $12 and change. Yes, if you want to buy one and send it to me, I'll be more than happy to sign it for you. Just follow the instructions on the signed copy page.

But I'm not just here to schill, I'm really excited about this release. It means that my work will be appearing in pages edited by Steve Almond, a really big dude in the short story literary scene and an awesome, hairy-chested Boston guy, as well as alongside the work of George Saunders, one of the short story all-times in my book (If you haven't read Pastoralia, you're really missing something.) and other writers whose names I haven't even been able to see yet (get my copy this week).

In any case, I'm excited and this is kind of a big deal around these parts. Hope you'll pick up a copy and/or show it to a friend if you're in a bookstore and point to my name in the contents and say, "I know this guy!"

Oh man, after a night in the Hummer-sine, I could barely get out of bed this morning, much less post the post I was supposed to drop about our... ummm... time together.
So here it is, folks. And thanks to Neil for stopping by.

Last stop: Ray "The Saturday Boy" Banks

West Coast again, for two reasons. 1) So Greg Bardsley can get more folding money from his wife, and 2) to pick up rising crime writer and podcaster Seth Harwood, author of the JACK PALMS (all caps when you write the man's name) series, the first of which met the page with a Breakneck Books edition, only to get chosen for the major leagues with a jump to Three Rivers Press next year.

You feel it before you hear it: the deep bass thrumming of the hip-hop theme song from the new JP3 podcast. And you know you're there when you see the crowd, all the fans Seth has called down for his send off. The man's built a following, 'casting the good word of PALMS into the void and hearing adoration in return. He called out for them to support him on Palms Sunday, and they responded in droves. I've even been roped in, reading a "Story So Far" for JP2: THIS IS LIFE. It's fun stuff, full of a fresh new energy the private eye genre needs badly. It's a never-ending party over there, and you should take a listen. Seth's got mad skillz (man, is that, like, ten years out of date?) with words and knows how to keep your ear to the speaker. And make sure to check out this great short story, "Young Junius" at the Storyglossia Crime Issue. Congrats on all his success.

He descends the stairs to applause and cheers, all decked out in black leather and shades. I swear he's got a Glock tucked under his jacket, but I'm not going to mention it. It's already like an armory in the Hummer-sine. One more for the pile. Inside, he pops the cork on some champagne and we all share a toast to the Great Psychobilly Blog Road Trip of 2008. Man, that really hit the spot. Good breakfast. I'll take a another glass, please.

With the podcaster along for the ride, I'll hook you up with some excerpts from Yellow Medicine I posted on my site: HERE, HERE, and HERE. I hope that whets your appetite for more, and more you shall have if you take a moment this coming Monday, May 12 (Psychobilly Monday) to purchase Yellow Medicine through Barnes & Noble. Seth's snapping cell phone pictures of the crazy party we've got going on in the back while I reach for the volume knob and step on the gas. Where to next? To answer the S.O.S. from The Jordans at Crimespree Magazine: "Need More Road Trip!" And so we oblige.

Today's the launch of our favorite online journal's new issue: Storyglossia #28, the All-Crime issue is out NOW. Edited by Anthony Neil Smith of Plots With Guns and the CrimeDog One Blog (also an old friend from JP2), this issue provides hot (and I mean HOT) stories from Vicki Hendricks, Megan Abbott, Ray Banks, and a little story I like to call "Young Junius." Fans of JACK WAKES UP and Junius Ponds, you've GOT to check this story out!

The day has come!! I'm here today with some big, big news in the land of everything Harwood and Palms: Jack Wakes Up has just been bought by Crown/Random House for a release in 2009 as a trade paperback from Three Rivers Press!

Thanks to Breakneck Books for bringing out JWU originally. Soon this version will be coming off the market, off Amazon, because the boys in New York bought Jack. This means a contract for me (one book right now) actual money, and more writing here on my end. It's basically the culmination of something I've been working toward for longer than I'd want to tell you and it's big big. This puts me up in "the reals."

I'm really pleased with the editor I ended up with, Julian Pavia, and can't wait to get JACK back on shelves and into every bookstore in America. Yeah.

Cambridge, MA: Two readings this week!

I'll be in Cambridge at Porter Square Books on 3/26 at 7PM. Lots of my family and folks will be there, but I'm hoping to see a lot of you too. I'm expecting some of you to turn out and come along for a pub crawl after!! Yee haw!

On 3/27 I'll be reading at a special event in a cool bar/lounge called The Enormous Room in Central Square! (starts at 7:00) My friend DJ Mosart 212 will be spinning beats and breaks after the reading. This promises to be an awesome night! Free tapas with drink orders until 8! Come out and celebrate what we did to Amazon! Soccergirl expected to be here too!

Back in the saddle!

So I've been slow to post more this week as things move on. More because I've been recuperating and getting the energy back up, enjoying a little time with my wife, than for any other reason. Turns out I was pretty wiped out after Palms Sunday. But you know who was even more wiped out? Amazon, those bastards. Not only did we hand it to them on a platter on Sunday, but we bought them out of Jack and home! Even though JWU is strictly print-on-demand and, as far as anyone knows, Amazon just orders the books to be printed as the purchases come in, somehow by 11:30 last Sunday morning, they were showing "out of stock. Ships in two to four weeks."

You know what I'm talking about if you saw this message. For going ahead and buying anyway, I thank you. So of course, Siglerisimo has his conspiracy theories about why this would be the case (and why the Amazon bestsellers numbers basically ground to an updating halt on Sunday) and I can't honestly say I disagree. Thing is, it seems like he's offered the best explanation I've heard. Might be he's the only one who has a theory to explain this (Amazon's not saying anything), but still.

So is Amazon against us? Do we care? Like the Russian in Rocky 4, we come to crush them. "I will break you." That's what we say to Amazon. Even if they move to Siberia to train by carrying heavy rocks and large branches across their shoulders as they tromp through knee-high snow, or run up large mountains wearing tight black pants and a snazzy leather jacket, we are stronger, faster, and shoot way more steroids than they can keep up with. So yes, it is inevitable: we will break them. Our next shot comes on April 1 when Siggie's Infected goes live for real. Lucky for me, I'm "better together" with him after our big push last Sunday. That should be great.

Sunday Second Life Thing

On Palms Sunday, at 2PM PST, I'm going back into Second Life to do a reading and Q&A on Meet the Author at the Red Sky Club, which happens to be at Written Word, on Cookie Island. (Of course!)
If you want to attend this event in SL, go to this link (slurl) at the appointed time. You'll be there to see me (and for me to see you) and you can ask questions by IM that the moderator will incorporate into her plans.
If you don't do Second Life, and have no idea what it is (pretty much like I am 98% of the time) you can actually watch this whole event as it streams live (yes audio and video) on the Second Life Cable Network (slcn.tv). Yes, really. They have programming on the site all day Sunday, and I'll be on from 2-3PM PST (that's 5-6PM EST). No baloney.

It's called Listmania on Amazon and it's actually very easy to do. If you've got about ten minutes you can get started on your first list. From there it's even easier to make more. The trick is that as long as you put Jack Wakes Up at the top of all the lists you make, its cover will pop up on all kinds of people's screens as they browse Amazon. This can really help make a big difference in how many folks beyond who we know buy JWU on Amazon.

Ok, my peeps. Here's the general gist: big things going on here... thing so big I can't even imagine. But biggest of all is that PALMS SUNDAY is rapidly approaching. No joke. 11 days away now and getting closer every minute. You don't believe me? Go here.
Now: here's more good news. Jack Wakes Up was inside the top 40,000 books on Amazon this morning. Not only is this into the 5's digits (way way better than the 6's, believe me) but it means we're getting ever closer to our big goal of the top ten on Palms Sunday. Hey all, stars are coming into alignment here at sethharwood.com. J.C. Hutchins and I finally got it all worked out for our interview to go through, we sat down and did it and now it's out. I think it's REALLY awesome. Definitely one of the most fun interviews I've had AND J.C. was cool enough to tack my Jack Wakes Up episode 01 onto the end of the talk.

So it's a long interview, but I think we got at some of what podcast fiction is really all about (whatever's left that I didn't get to cover with Soccergirl), what's happening with the genre, and some great talk about writing as well. I'm really ecstatic about this one and I think you'll be too when you get to give 'er a listen.

Some of you may have noticed that the Pats lost the Super Bowl. And I was wrong about them going 19-0. But I'm pretty happy with them going 18-1 over the season. It was definitely the best season of football I've seen in my life and, though they didn't win the SuperBowl, they were the best team by a mile all season long.

Were they the best team ever? Maybe not. Were they as good as the 18-1 1985 Bears? If so, I can definitely live with that. Somebody got to them and now nobody's perfect or invincible. Is that a surprise? Not so much.

Wow. This past month has been so crazy and I've been so nuts here getting ready for JP3, Palms Sunday and JACK WAKES UP coming out in print, that I didn't even get to tell you guys about my trip to Vegas and appearing on stage at the Venetian!!
Yeah, Wayne Brady and Blue Men were there too, but who really cares about them?

OK. Holidays coming up and it's time for me to check in with what's what. First thing is I finished my classes, don't have to go teach anymore for about a month. Amen. I still have a big bag of final papers, finals and short story portfoloios to grade, but those can wait until the beginning of January or my flight to Florida this weekend. My voice has come and gone and it's not great right now, but it's here, more or less.
Writing-wise, I have a rough first draft of JP3, the long draft of JP2 (the one I podcasted) and I need to work on both before the JWU release in March. I'm working on lining up a few readings for after the book comes out, on the East Coast, when I'm there before Noircon in Philly on April 3rd, or so. Panel there should be really exciting. Hoping to do readings in Boston, NYC, Philly. Talking to the bookstores now. Locked up the BART ads for JWU here in the SF area. Yeah!
The writing's on pause. Everything's on pause and all I want to do is sit and rest. Maybe go out to a movie later. Just feels like my batteries are really running low. I know I need to get out the new podcast episode of Fisher Cat, and I'll do it today, but then I just rest and do nothing for a while. JP2 draft needs to be ready to go for JWU's release, in case anyone comes asking for it, and JP3... well, you guys know what I've promised about JP3 coming out. So that's in the hopper too.
Sound like a lot of work? yeah, I thought so too.
At least Jack's still working on taking over Japan.

Darkly Dreaming Dexter vs. Dexter (on Showtime) and how this relates to podcast novels

I'm wondering how many of you guys have been watching the Dexter series on Showtime.

Though I hear discouraging posts about posting on movies and am sure this applies to TV shows, I KNOW that the subject matter of Dexter and the handling of it has to appeal to many of us on the list. Fact is, I've thought since the first season that Dexter is one of the best shows around and --at the very least--picks up where Sopranos left the bar for a series: the highest level. This is absolutely crime fiction on the screen and I actually think that the additional time in episodes that the series format allows makes for a much more complicated, developed and intricate plot line than a movie or a couple of movies could allow. Actually, I think it makes the TV series even more complex than the books.

The two big factors in how a twelve-episode series season excels over a two plus hour movie are that more plot threads can be developed and, with this, more characters can be developed in greater detail. Ultimately, I think it's the character development as a result of the added time to work things out that I think makes this series much more than just good tv. And the character development comes from leaving Dexter's head and exploring different scenes that take place even when Dexter's not around. This is a freedom that even the book doesn't give itself.

Aren't these two factors, multiple threading and a more complex social network of characters, much more than just good TV? I’d even say (and I’ve seen others post about this here) that the series is even better than the books. On the most basic level, the books never leave Dexter’s head. Sure, we can really get into his stream of consciousness and how he thinks about what happens, but I think the added benefit of having the characters around him—Doakes, LaGuerta, Deb, Lundy, Rita and Paul, Angel—developed into much more than flat types, into real feeling three-dimensional characters that we can sympathize with makes this series so much more. Take Sgt. Doakes for example: though he’s a major antagonist in the second series, we’ve spent enough time around him to see his strong points and good qualities as well as his single-minded pursuit of Dexter. He’s a character part of us needs to root for.

The strength of the book comes in how we can root for Dexter, even as he’s a serial killer. In the TV series all the characters are crucially flawed, and ALL of them are worth rooting for on some level (Ok, well most of them). In the first book, LaGuerta is really pretty flat. Even as she changes a bit at the end, she’s still two dimensional. In the series, she’s got a lot more to offer, particularly as her connections to Doakes become more involved and ultimately get questioned.

In any case, it strikes me as very interesting here that the TV series has gone so much further than the book. This seems like new ground, to me at least. If you think of a great book and then the movie, usually there’s a lot left out, or at the very most it’ll bring in most of the elements of the book. I can’t think of many cases where a movie—definitely not any case of a tv series—doing it better, adding more complicated development to what was in the book.

But this is definitely happening with Dexter. I’m curious how many others of you are watching it, and what you think of its complexity. The series makes me think more of Pride and Prejudice in how the characters are all thoroughly explored then it makes me think of Jeff Lindsay’s books. Certainly leaving the head of the main character has enabled a great deal here.

Full disclosure: I’ve been rereading and thinking a lot about Steven Johnson’s Everything Bad Is Good For You where he analyzes contemporary TV (not Dexter) and how much more complex it’s gotten in the last 20-30 years. It’s got me doing a lot of thinking.

This seems like a big issue to me right now because I'm thinking a lot about Scott Sigler's podcast novels and how he expands them beyond a few characters, how they grow by him offering us multiple characters' points of view. This is really strong and I admire it. I guess I'm tempted to leave this behind in my Jack Palms series, but at the same time, I think it's not necessarily part of the standard Crime Fiction genre kind of thing to do. Or, that is it seems like it'd work in a podcast but perhaps not in a book. So I'm hung up on that right now. Anyone got any thoughts about it, I'd be glad to know 'em.

Word up. Yeah, so for those of you who weren't there, PNME this year was really good. I definitely had a good time, which is saying something. Never seen so many iPhones, never seen so many folks twittering--seriously, like mad. This whole world of twit-friends is all new to me. Thing is, I tried it. Met some really cool and good folks at PNME and learning about some of the very coolest in other podcasts out there was definitely a highlight. I'm sure I'll add to this list as the day goes on, but for now, some of the great folks I met and shows I heard about are: Jeff Sass (no show), Brian Ibbott (Coverville), Mikel O.D. (Most People Are DJs), the good folks from Podcast User Magazine, Les Zaldor (Zaldor's World), C.C. Chapman (Accident Hash) who's clearly something of a podcasting hero, Dan Klass (The Bitterest Pill), Victor Cajiao (Typical Mac User) thanks for the ride, Victor, Elsie Escobar (Elsie's Yoga Class), Pistachio, Darusha Wehm (Beautiful Red), and a whole other series of folks, hosts, and others who I'll probably remember right after I post this and then I'll have to post again.

Needless to say, it was a business card frenzy and I gave out a ton of mine, as well as stickers (don't worry you can have some too if you email me your address), and all kindsa good will.
New thing is these little business cards called "Moo Cards." People were all excited about these, but all I did was manage to lose the ones I got. I met Evo Terra!! Yes, that's another guy I met! Evo finally. Wow. Good. And Mark Y. Nemcoff, who turned out to be one hell of a lot cooler than I'd have guessed from his podcasts (no offense, Mark), and even... the guys from Ask A Ninja!! I'm pretty sure I met the official ninja from the show, but you'll have to download episode 17 and listen to get that full story.

Dragon Con: The World

So that's Dragon Con: dice, costumes, lots and LOTS of panels, tons of people, short on food and sleep. The truth is, it was fun, I met a lot of great people and a big chunk of the podcast community, and appeared on a panel about podcasting your writing. All very great.
Too many podcasters there to mention, but thanks to everyone who helped me to have a great time.
